I am pleased to announce that the gym construction project is coming along well. The steel for the gym has been delivered and is now being erected. We anticipate releasing a tentative completion date for the gym soon. The grand opening ceremony for the gym will also be announced.

As all of you know, our country is beginning to experience the economic recession, and this may take its toll on school budgets. In order to minimize the effects of this on our school, we plan to have a “Spring Fundraiser for School Benefit” along with the official opening ceremony of the gym. You should expect to receive more information about the fundraiser in the coming weeks.

I would also like to let you know that SST has changed its meal payment system for students. Students will need to use their IDs instead of the paper meal tickets when receiving their food in the cafeteria. This system will be in effect as of Tuesday, January 13, 2009. Previously purchased lunch tickets must be converted to lunch credit in the front office before the end of the day on Friday January 16th, 2009. Any new payments for meals will be credited to the students’ IDs immediately. With the new system, parents will be able to keep track of meal payments and charges from the “SST information Center” on the school website. Students will be able to use their IDs and not have to worry about keeping paper tickets. We believe that this new system will make everybody’s jobs much easier. In near future, we hope to streamline the use of IDs for various other purposes in the school as well.

SST is excited to announce that it is hosting an online “Digital Storytelling Contest,” DISTCO 2008, along with the University of Houston, the University of Texas at San Antonio and the Cosmos Foundation. The contest is open to all K-12 students in Texas, and all SST students and teachers are encouraged to create and submit their original digital stories.  Digital stories must be submitted within a certain time frame and manner for the contest. For more information about contest rules and procedures, please visit the school website or visit the competition website, www.distco.org . This exciting project will benefit both students and teachers by exposing them to new technology and challenging them to showcase their creativity and skills in multimedia, technology, researching, and writing. The deadline is January 19th.

What else should you expect from SST in January? The School-wide Geography Bee will be held on January 16th and the Spelling Bee will be held on January 29th, both in the school cafeteria. We will also be celebrating Martin Luther King Day in school on January 23rd and holding the 3rd annual Turkish Olympiad on the same night. Please don’t forget to mark your calendars for the School-wide Science Fair on January 31st, 2009. There will be a public viewing session followed by an award ceremony on that day.

I look forward to sharing more good news with you about SST in next month’s letter

Happy New Year, and have a successful new semester!

Dear Parents/Guardians and Students,

I would like to welcome everybody back to school and wish everyone a productive, safe and successful new year. Since its inception only a few years ago, SST has grown a great deal.  We have seen our school succeed in citywide, statewide and even international academic competitions. We have seen the impact SST has made in our students’ lives. We will keep doing our best to educate our students and prepare them for the 21st century. In this corner, I would like to share news and information with the school community about what is happening at the school and what is to come.
